What To Do If Your Brakes fail
If you have ever experienced vehicle brake failure while driving you know just how scary that is.  Trying to slow down when your brakes are gone or only partially working is terrifying.

Most people hope that a brake failure will never happen to them.  But even if you have a well maintained vehicle the brakes could fail for a few reasons.  knowing how to handle the unexpected loss of the brakes can save your life and prevent serious possible injury to others around you. It is every drivers responsibility to be a safe and courteous driver. Therefore, It’s a good idea to understand what to do if your brakes fail.

It is very important to be familiar with the procedures for dealing with a loss of braking power or a total loss of the brakes.

If you ever lose your brakes don't panic. take your foot off the gas pedal.  Then try pumping the brakes.  It will take some leg strength.  Sometimes old and dirty brake fluid lines get clogged by dirt or air bubbles.  Pumping the brakes can force out whatever is dirt or air bubbles that are blocking the brake fluid lines.  The car brakes need hydraulic brake fluid to activate the brake caliper that has pistons that press on the brake pads so they make contact with steel discs called rotors which are bolted to your vehicle wheels.  This is where the term disc brakes came from.  In the old days cars had drum brakes that were not as effective at stopping a vehicle as disc brakes.  The friction of the brake pads against the metal discs is what slows and stops the car.  But if the brake lines are clogged and the caliper pistons can't squeeze the brake pads against the discs the car won't stop.  Pumping the brake may force out the clog and restore brake fluid and braking power to the brake system. 

If pumping the brakes doesn't fix the problem, then very slowly and carefully engage the emergency parking brake just a little bit at a time until the car slows enough to safely pull over onto the side of the road.  Do not suddenly yank the emergency brake to its full on position.  Pulling on the emergency brake suddenly could cause your vehicle to go into a spin.  The emergency brake is mechanical and is operated by a steel cable.  It does not use hydraulic brake fluid and caliper pistons.  Pull the brake handle up slowly and carefully if you have a emergency brake handle, or press the emergency brake pedal down gradually if you have the foot pedal type of emergency brake.  Then turn on your emergency hazard flasher lights. The hazard flashers will warn other drivers that you have a problem and to go around you.

An additional way you can help slow your car down is by shifting into a lower gear.  If you have an automatic transmission that would be gear position 2 or even 3. This is called downshifting or engine braking and it will slow the vehicle down.  Don't go straight to the lowest gear 3 unless you have to because down shifting at speed could damage your engine and transmission.  Always try to pull over as far as possible to the side of the road so you are out of the way of moving traffic.  After you are safely out of the way of traffic on the shoulder of the road stay in your vehicle and call for help.
