To help avoid ever running out of gas in the first place it's good to get into the habit of checking the fuel gauge every time you start your car.  When on a cross state or cross country road trip try to do some research on gas stations along the way and plan out the gas stops you will need to make along the route you will be traveling.

Start by calculating the range or distance your vehicle can drive on a tank of gas.  Then using Google maps and directions find out how many miles it is between gas stop stations. To calculate the range you can drive on a tank of gas multiply the number of gallons of gas your gas tank holds by the average miles per gallon (mpg) that your vehicle gets. 
So if your vehicles gas tank holds 18-gallon gas when full, and your vehicle averages 20 miles per gallon then 18 times 20 is  miles. In this example you would plan to stop at gas station well before you put 360 miles.  To be conservative plan your gas stop well inside of 360 miles.  Hitting traffic jams or driving through cities will make your vehicles average miles per gallon go down.  The amount weight in your vehicle will also effect how many miles per gallon it gets. So, your vehicle may get 20 miles per gallon close to home without being weighed down by a family and luggage but when on a trip fully loaded your vehicle may only get 16 miles to the gallon.

Running out of gas is not only a headache and inconvenient but it is also bad for your vehicles fuel pump.  he engine fuel pump needs fuel flowing through it for lubrication.

When your car is about to run out of gas the engine will lose surge, hesitate, sputter and lose power and then stop running.  When this happen you need to get out of the way of other drivers.  You will need to use the forward motion or momentum of the vehicle to coast over to the side of the road.   The rolling momentum will not last long so coast off the road as far onto the shoulder as possible.

When you are stuck on the side of the road whether because you ran out of gas or are having  a mechanical problem,  it's a good idea to call for roadside service rather than accept help from strangers.
