The reason is that a vehicle traveling at 65 miles per hour is moving more than 95 feet per second.  This means that at 65 miles per hour a moving vehicle will travel about three-hundred feet in only three seconds. 

If the driver of a car in traffic three-hundred feet away is not paying attention for just three seconds, he will move three-hundred feet closer to you and possibly hit your car or you.  That is the reason it is recommended that you place your last reflective orange triangle sign three-hundred to five-hundred feet behind your vehicle.
